“The structure was evacuated (…) there are four confirmed victims,” the firefighters indicated on the X social network.
The fire broke out on Friday night at the San Giovanni Evangelista hospital in Tivoli, about 20 kilometers from Rome.
As reported by the AFP news agency, Health Minister Orazio Schillaci lamented a “terrible tragedy” and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
“We hope that the investigations will clarify the causes of the fire as soon as possible,” the official said this Saturday morning in a statement.
Meanwhile, the patients were transferred to other hospitals in the region or to a nearby municipal gym, the Tivoli municipality indicated on Facebook.
According to the media, the fire broke out in the basement of the hospital and spread to the kitchens and upper floors.
