Shropshire? Never heard. Most importantly – how do you pronounce it? “Schropscher”. But where is that actually? In England, south of Manchester on the border with Wales.
If organic gardener Karl Ploberger is exploring this largely unknown area this time, there is one reason: his passion for discovery. This time, his summer garden trip to England (July 2nd to 6th, 2024) takes you to a not-so-frequently visited area with very extraordinary gardens.

For example, it says Wollerton Old Hall on the program. The garden was voted the most beautiful garden in England. Or ” Hodnet Hall”, a huge property that you probably haven’t explored even after a few days. When a hotelier falls victim to a passion for gardening, only something special can come out of it: “Goldstone Hall” combines epicurean hospitality with great enthusiasm for gardening.
The most extraordinary garden that was ever on the program is called “Cwm Way Garden” and can best be described as “perfection from a private hand”: it is hard to believe how such a paradise has been managed to create such a paradise in just over three decades. Rock garden, terrace garden, designed according to colors, gravel garden, garden made of tree roots and a mausoleum is also currently being built, the grotto is already finished.

One of the most beautiful gardens owned by the National Trust, the keeper of castles, stately homes, gardens and nature. Already in Wales “Powis Castle”. On the southern slope there are terraced gardens with an abundance of Mediterranean plants, always accompanied by a sensational view of the Welsh countryside. But the truly incredible thing are the 400-year-old yew hedges, which the gardeners spend weeks pruning into the shape of clouds. One stop is a journey back in time to the Victorian era: “Blists Hill Victorian Town”. Time is turned back not only in buildings, shops and craft workshops, but also with the people who appear in the open-air museum in original costumes. The many smells are also noteworthy, from the iodine in the pharmacy, the beer in the pub, the smell of bread in the bakery to the hearty smell in the pig pen.

A garden where you can see that nothing is impossible: ” Stretton Old Hall”. Two designers and an extremely committed head gardener have created an extraordinary garden paradise within just a few months. Water gardens with lines of sight, each area styled and full of plant diversity. And as we all know, the best comes at the end: Ashwood Nursery by John Massey is now a place of pilgrimage for garden lovers. The multi-award-winning Chelsea Flower Show gold medalist opens his private garden. Finally there’s a short detour into the “RHS Garden” in Wisley.
