He does not have a valid driving license and the license plates mounted on the car have been reported stolen: During his five-kilometer escape from the police, a drug driver (34) from Serbia is said to have seriously injured two uninvolved road users.
Although officers have clearly identified the 34-year-old as the driver, the suspect accuses his cousin of being behind the wheel.
Intentional endangerment of the public, coercion, serious bodily harm, resistance to state authority: the allegations are serious; the Serb was admitted to the Josefstadt prison at the weekend.
Police officers saved themselves by jumping to the side
On Friday evening, the 34-year-old came across a routine check at the Gaudenzdorfer Belt in Meidling and immediately stepped on the gas. Police officers could only save themselves by jumping to the side. He ignored a red light and hit a cyclist; the 46-year-old suffered serious injuries.
The driver ended up ramming an oncoming car on the Landstraßer Belt, seriously injuring a 52-year-old woman. Both victims required emergency medical treatment and were taken to hospitals. They were already on the mend and should be released soon, it was said on Sunday.
Passenger went into hiding
The 34-year-old and his two unknown passengers got out of the Jaguar after the head-on collision and ran away. The driver was arrested a short time later. The other inmates were still in hiding on Sunday.
The 34-year-old complained of shoulder pain while in police custody. But after the police called emergency services, the 34-year-old refused to be examined. A medical officer diagnosed the Serb as suffering from drug addiction. A small amount of cannabis herb was found in the car. The alleged driver claims that he was sitting in the back seat during the crazy ride.
Happiness prevented more accidents
“It is only through luck and the careful behavior of other vehicle drivers and pedestrians that there have not been many more accidents,” says Barbara Gass from the press office of the Vienna State Police Directorate. However, several parked cars were damaged.
Who owns the jaguar?
It was still unclear on Sunday who owned the seized Jaguar. In any case, the license plates attached to the getaway vehicle were reported stolen. The last registered owner stated that he had legally sold the vehicle. How it got to the Serb is unclear. The car was not “registered upright,” reports police spokeswoman Barbara Gass.
