“The people have spoken and so it should be,” X owner Elon Musk wrote on Sunday in response to a poll from the previous day on whether the Jones account should be reinstated. Almost two million votes were cast, with around 70 percent voting for Jones to return to X.

Twitter permanently banned Jones and his website Infowars in 2018 for violating the platform’s conduct guidelines. Apple, YouTube and Facebook had previously switched off Jones on their online platforms for similar reasons.

Account accessible again

After Musk’s announcement, the account on X was accessible again. The last post was from September 6, 2018, the day the account was blocked. There was initially no further comment from X or Jones.

Alex Jones, who spread conspiracy theories about an 18-year-old’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Texas, was sentenced last year to pay nearly $1.5 billion ($1.39 billion) for defamation and telling lies in connection with the shooting billion euros) to pay compensation to the relatives of the victims. He had claimed that the victims were actors who staged the rampage as part of a government plot to restrict US citizens’ gun rights and confiscate their guns. 20 children and six school employees were shot in the rampage.

Since Musk took over Twitter last year, numerous suspended accounts on the short messaging service, now renamed X, have been restored, including that of former US President Donald Trump. Musk has reduced content moderation and is criticized for allowing hate and hate speech on the platform. In this context, numerous major advertising customers have turned their backs on X. Musk has also come under pressure on X because of his own controversial political statements. Critics accuse him of supporting right-wing populist or even right-wing extremist positions.
