Interconnected all-day school continues to be a minority program only

Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) wants to ensure more equal opportunities through more all-day schools, and the states are also supporting expansion. However, according to Ö1, interlinked all-day schools with an alternation of teaching, learning and leisure time are still a minority program. Overall, a third of six to 14-year-olds in Austria attend an all-day school, the vast majority attend a so-called “open all-day school”. There are lessons in the morning and learning and leisure time in the afternoon. According to the Ö1 “Morgenjournal” from Monday, around 2,400 locations offer this form in Austria.

The reason given by Salzburg’s Education Councilor Daniela Gutschi (ÖVP) is that many parents find the interlocked form too inflexible because they cannot take their child out of school in the afternoon for music lessons, for example (because there are lessons, note).

Leader Vienna

The undisputed leader among “real” all-day schools is Vienna with 103 locations. In the federal capital – unlike in the other federal states – the consent of two thirds of the parents and teachers is not necessary before switching to integrated all-day schooling.

In the Ö1 broadcast, all federal states advocated an expansion of all-day schools, both open and interconnected. However, the current system with its many players – school, community, education directorate, state and, through funding, the federal government – is very complex, complained Vorarlberg’s Education Councilor Barbara Schöbi-Fink (ÖVP). “For further development, the system would need to be simplified,” she called for a suggestion from the ministry. It said that they were already working with the states on a solution for long-term financing and better organization of all-day schools.
