4 tips to ensure that the poinsettia thrives

The “most beautiful spurge plant”, as the literal translation of the botanical name Euphorbia pulcherrima is, originally comes from the tropical deciduous forests of Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina. The bushes there grow up to four meters high and always adorn themselves with flowers when the night is longer than the day. So right when Christmas is approaching. 1. Of course – and now it becomes difficult for anyone with a non-green thumb: If you drown the plant and leave it in a water bath for days, you will also experience the leaves falling – within a very short time.
3. He’s hungry too: If you really want to keep the plant healthy and vital, you should add fertilizer to the irrigation water at least once a week. Any commercially available flower fertilizer is suitable for this. If you want to garden organically, use a fertilizer made from sugar beet vinasse or water with the cooled cooking water from the potatoes.
4. This is how he survives: Anyone who thinks that the red leaves are simply out of place in the New Year because they only mean “Christmas” should now cut the plant back vigorously and can soon enjoy the delicate new growth. Anyone who also repots demonstrates their passion for plants and ensures particularly strong growth. From May onwards, the poinsettia should be on the balcony or terrace. It is pruned a few more times until September in order to branch out nicely, and then comes into the house at the beginning of October. Where there is no artificial light, the beautiful flowers will appear again from December.
