The city is known for its rich history, impressive architecture and lively cultural scene, it said. Mercer conducts annual surveys on the quality of life in various metropolises – with the exception of the Corona pandemic. Vienna has secured first place for the eleventh time.
According to the survey, the Swiss metropolis of Zurich is in second place. Auckland, New Zealand secured third place on the podium. Behind them are Copenhagen, Geneva, Frankfurt, Munich, Vancouver, Sydney and Düsseldorf in the top ten. The Sudanese capital Khartoum brings up the rear in the ranking at number 241.
Vienna’s mayor Michael Ludwig was pleased with the top ranking. “We are working around the clock with full commitment to offer the people of Vienna the best possible life. Of course, it is nice to see that these efforts are also being recognized in international rankings,” said the city leader in a press release.
Regular criticism of surveys
The survey has been comparing more than 200 major cities annually for two decades based on 39 criteria that play a central role from the perspective of employees who have been sent abroad. These include political, social, economic and environmental aspects, and health and educational opportunities also play a role.
However, there is also regular criticism of the survey – especially due to its target group. In 2019, the Vienna FPÖ spoke of an uninformative “manager ranking” in this context. The last “Quality of Living” survey to date took place this year. By then, Vienna had secured first place for the tenth time in a row.
