At the Miami airport, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents found the pistol, with five 32-caliber bullets in the chamber, among Hinds’ belongings.
Police detained the man and a judge indicted him for carrying a weapon in a concealed manner, a crime that in Florida is punishable by up to five years in jail and a $ 5,000 fine. Hinds has pleaded not guilty and will appear again in court in mid-December.
The TSA informed Barbados authorities about the security breach at its Grantley Adams International Airport.
“I have urgently requested a report that I hope to receive very soon,” Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley told reporters in Bridgetown.
“Someone or several people will be held accountable” for what happened, he warned. “The consequences for the country are serious and important. So be clear that these failures will be resolved.”
The news is especially worrying for the United States, as it demonstrates a breach of the security regulations imposed in the wake of the attacks of September 11, 2001.
Washington requires foreign governments to apply US security standards at airports with direct flights to the North American country.
