Blinken said about the talks between Biden and Putin “in the very near future”

US President Joe Biden will speak with Russian leader Vladimir Putin very soon. This was announced on Friday, December 3, by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

“I expect them to talk very soon,” he told Reuters NEXT.

Blinken added that during the talks, Biden would reaffirm his commitment to a predictable and stable relationship with Russia.

Earlier that day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the exact date of the upcoming meeting between Putin and Biden has not yet been agreed. He also commented on information that appeared in the media that the talks between the leaders could take place on December 7. According to him, this date appears during the discussion.

In turn, the assistant to the Russian leader Yuri Ushakov said that one of the topics of the upcoming talks between the presidents of Russia and the United States will be the situation in Ukraine. The parties will also discuss Afghanistan, consider the topics of Iran, Libya and Syria. In addition, the conversation will touch upon the issue of bilateral relations, as well as the implementation of the agreements reached during the previous meeting in Geneva.

On December 2, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov expressed hope that a conversation between the presidents of Russia and the United States would take place in the coming days. He stressed that the upcoming conversation is important in the current conditions.

The day before, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance would welcome a new personal meeting between Putin and Biden. He stressed that NATO not only believes in a dialogue with Russia and approves any direct contacts between it and the United States, but also willingly expresses its readiness to conduct a dialogue with the Russian Federation at the alliance level.

The previous meeting between Putin and Biden took place on June 16 at the Villa La Grange in Geneva. At a press conference following the meeting, the US President said that the talks were held in a kind and positive atmosphere. Putin, in turn, noted that the talks were held “in the same language,” and stressed the desire to bring positions closer to their American counterpart.

Following the summit, the leaders adopted a joint statement on strategic stability.
