For years there was a lot of criticism of the work of the SV Ried Academy. Some critics said that too few players made the leap into the professional sector. The situation has changed since Ried’s sports director Wolfgang Fiala took office a little over three years ago. With Arjan Malic, Belmin Beganovic, Jonas Mayer, Diego Madritsch and Ben Wörndl – to name just a few – homegrown players are regularly used by the professionals. “Based on their development, you can see that we have done a lot of things right in recent years,” says Ried’s sports director Fiala.
The good work of the Rieder coaching staff did not go unnoticed by the other Bundesliga clubs and so Wolfgang Schrattenecker – who worked in the SVR youth ranks for a total of six years and was most recently head of the academy – was headhunted by Red Bull Salzburg and now works for the series champions in the area of youth scouting. For Fiala, Tumeltshamer’s move to Salzburg came as a bit of a surprise, but he didn’t want to put any obstacles in his way: “Red Bull plays in a different league and is the goal of many players and coaches. We didn’t want to take this opportunity away from Wolfgang. He has He has done great work for us over the years. We wish him all the best for his future journey.” With Marcel Thallinger, the U18 coach will also be in charge of the Wenzel Schmidt Football Academy on an interim basis until the summer, together with Ulla Riepl.

New trainer
There is news not only in the academy, but also in the Young Vikings: A new head coach, Julian Baumgartner, has been presented. The Mehrbacher and former captain of the Young Vikings already looked after the team in the autumn, together with Alfons Fischer from Utzenai. Now he takes sole responsibility on the supervisory bench and ends his active playing career. “It happened faster than expected. I actually planned to play myself in the spring. But I couldn’t and didn’t want to refuse the offer as a coach,” says Baumgartner. The 29-year-old enjoys complete trust within the club. “He is a great coaching talent and should now take the next step in his development. Julian can count on our total support,” says Fiala.
After 15 rounds played, the Rieder second team is in the penultimate place in the Central Regional League. However, the gap to the saving bank is only two points. The big goal is to stay in the league.
Relegation battle
“The regional league is the ideal platform for our young players to make the leap into adult football. We’ve seen that in recent years. That’s why we’ll strengthen the team and do everything we can to stay in the league. Even if the plan “It won’t be easy. The quality of the league is high. There are a lot of good teams,” says Fiala.
The new coach wants to lay the foundation for staying in the league during preparation. “We will work hard to start the second half of the season well prepared,” says Baumgartner.
19-year-old Simon Nußbaumer is considered a potential newcomer. The young striker from the Upper Austrian league team Union Mondsee (13 games/7 goals in the current season) has already trained with the team several times. “A very interesting player. He left a very good impression,” says Fiala.
