Climate Summit: the agreement

After several negotiations and debates, an agreement was reached, which has the following as its main points:

Fossil fuels

The text states that the international community “recognizes the need for deep, rapid and lasting reductions in greenhouse gases,” and to this end “asks the parties to contribute” with a list of climate actions, “according to their national circumstances.” “.

The first action is “triple renewable energy capacity” and “double average energy efficiency” between now and 2030.

Then, “accelerate efforts to progressively reduce carbon without reduction measures”, accelerate the use of “fuels with zero or low emissions” and “carry out a transition from fossil fuels (…) in a fair, orderly and equitable manner”.

This must be accelerated “in this crucial decade for achieve carbon neutrality by 2050“, that is, that the emissions are totally equal to the compensation measures.

Annual balance of measures

The participants also decided to ask the UN to organize an “annual dialogue” to analyze compliance with the goals established to combat climate change. This will be starting June 2024instead of waiting eight years to take stock as happened now.

Global Adaptation Goals

Two years ago, the signatory countries of the 2015 Paris Agreement decided to launch a special program, the Global Adaptation Goals to climate change.

At the Dubai meeting they agreed that “by 2030 all Parties will have carried out updated assessments of climate hazards, the impacts of climate change and exposure to risks and vulnerabilities.”

By 2027, countries must have established “multi-hazard early warning systems, risk reduction information services and systematic observation“of climate change. “By 2030 all Parties will have made progress in the implementation of their national adaptation plans, policies and strategies,” the text adds.
