The widening of the bus lane at the pier for cruise ships has been discussed for a long time; the basic agreement was already reached in 2020. The implementation should now gain momentum, and the necessary conditions for this should be created by means of an ordinance at today’s local council meeting. As reported, the plan was to reduce the lowest seating step by around 60 centimeters to 40 centimeters.
There was already criticism before today’s meeting from the Greens, FPÖ and Linz+. With the votes of the ÖVP and SPÖ there would actually have been a majority. Actually, because it surprisingly didn’t happen today. In the end, the VP remained as the only supporter. The remaining groups abstained or voted against.

The mandates’ dissatisfaction was not only sparked by the planned structural measures per se, but above all by the communication style of the Linz ÖVP. The fact that at the same time as the official information about the road regulations, the ÖVP sent out a heavily green rendering to the media, on which the seat step can still be seen in the familiar form, caused irritation – also in the SPÖ.
The rendering is “throwing sand in the eyes of Linzers,” criticized planning councilor Dietmar Prammer (SP). This does not correspond to the content of the regulation and has not been agreed upon in any way. The SPÖ continues to support the expansion in principle, but not under these circumstances. The abstention was already apparent.
Controversial rendering
SPÖ parliamentary group leader Stefan Giegler later justified his parliamentary group’s decision by saying that traffic officer, deputy mayor Martin Hajart, was unable to satisfactorily explain the irritation that had been caused despite being asked to do so. At the meeting, Lorenz Potocnik (Linz+) even went so far as to accuse the People’s Party of “targeted deception” by publishing the visualization.
Meanwhile, Helge Langer, club chairman of the Green Party, spoke of an “early” Christmas present: “This decision is the only right one in the interests of the local recreation area on the Danube and the people. I hope that the plans are finally off the table.” He repeated the Greens’ suggestion to use the reversal loop at the Brucknerhaus for buses instead of the Ernst-Koref-Promenade.
City Councilor for Security Michael Raml (FP) commented on the vote with the words: “The local council presented traffic officer Hajart with the bill for his solo efforts.” The protection of the local recreation area is more important than bus parking spaces for tourists.
“Is to be accepted”
Hajart said after the vote that there was no majority in the local council. Nothing will come of the shipping tourism concern, which could have increased safety for cyclists and pedestrians. He wants the rendering to be seen as an impulse and as an incentive to discuss possible redesigns.
By the way, the criticized rendering comes from the JVP. It was created a long time ago. That’s why the seating step can still be seen in its current form. The visualization should show how green this area could be made.
