On Wednesday, the group opened access to its latest AI technology to external developers on several levels so that they can write specific programs based on the new technology.
Faster and more versatile
A week earlier, the company had surprisingly presented the model called Gemini. It should not only be faster than the GPT-4 model from Microsoft partner OpenAI, but also significantly more versatile. Gemini can not only generate texts in a chatbot, but also solve specific problems and make situation-dependent decisions. It can also record information from photos and videos.

Faster than expected, Google is now giving external developers the opportunity to write their own applications based on Gemini. On the one hand, this applies to the Google AI Studio development environment, which can be used to build smaller AI applications. As an example, Google demonstrated the programming of an app for real estate agents that can write a detailed description of the residential property based on a video recording of a tour of a house. Gemini applications were also demonstrated in Vertex AI, an AI service from Google Cloud for companies, and in Duet AI, an AI solution for Google’s office applications.
Google opens price competition
In the race against Microsoft and OpenAI, the Internet company is not only relying on the performance of Gemini technology, but also started a price competition on Wednesday. Thomas Kurian, the head of Google Cloud, announced a comprehensive price cut. The technology can be used free of charge up to a limit that is sufficient for many applications. For the Vertex AI enterprise solution, after a free trial period, input fees would be reduced to 25 percent of the original price ($0.00025 per 1,000 letters or $0.0025 per image). For text output, the price will be halved to $0.0005 per 1000 characters.
Google has long been considered a leader in artificial intelligence. But then the Internet pioneer fell behind. A year ago, the start-up OpenAI surprisingly came to the top with the release of its chat bot ChatGPT. The software caused a stir because it can form sentences like a human. It is trained with huge amounts of data and estimates, word by word, how a sentence could continue. However, this brings with it the risk that it can give out completely incorrect information. All major AI players are currently working on making their systems more factually accurate.
