A 26-year-old man would have had to answer for serious commercial fraud at the Klagenfurt regional court in the fall. The Klagenfurt resident was accused of large-scale fraud involving Lego sets – he had already been sentenced to unconditional imprisonment for the same scam in 2021. The man did not come to trial in the fall and has now been caught, the police announced on Wednesday.
520,000 euros in damage
The man had already deceived more than 250 customers from home and abroad with his Lego shop from 2019. Orders recorded were said to have been sent incorrectly or not at all. In several cases sand was sent instead of Lego to simulate the correct weight. The Klagenfurt resident sometimes did not have the goods in stock or ready for shipping as promised. According to the public prosecutor’s office, not only the customers but also two payment providers were harmed by the remittances carried out. The damage was worth 520,000 euros, it was said in the summer of 2021 when the man appeared in court for the first time. He was sentenced to three years in prison, one of which was unconditional.
Suspect in custody
But this conviction did not deter the man. In record-breaking time – even before the first verdict became final – he relapsed and, according to the public prosecutor’s office, cheated again with non-existent Lego sets. However, this time the amount of damage was not as high as the first time, according to the authorities. That is why he would have had to appear again before the Klagenfurt regional court on October 25th this year. The man did not show up at the trial and was not found at home, which is why an arrest order was issued against him. He was finally arrested on Tuesday evening and taken into custody because of the risk of escape and the risk of committing a crime.
