The zoo and cemetery are open again

The clean-up work after the onset of winter with all the snow is still ongoing in the public green spaces of the city of Wels. The zoo and the cemetery have already reopened and have been accessible again since yesterday afternoon.

Both green areas were closed to visitors due to snow pressure and imminent danger from breaking branches or falling trees. During the lockdown, the cemetery was only opened for burials as an exception under the strictest security precautions. It is now possible to remember the deceased there every day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. “The check of the trees was absolutely necessary because we had to ensure that there was no danger to the cemetery visitors at any time,” says cemetery consultant, city councilor Ralph Schäfer (FP).

Zoo speaker, city councilor Thomas Rammerstorfer (Greens) says that the zoo employees were repeatedly challenged by extreme weather events this year. Several storms and, most recently, heavy snowfall made closures necessary for safety reasons.
