After the country launched the call for applicants, proposals were received from more than 10 countries around the world.
Through the program Uruguay Innovation Hubthe government attracted the interest of 14 business accelerators to promote local startups, after launching a call for applicants and receiving proposals from more than 10 countries, among which stand out Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Spain, USA, Israel and Swiss.
The objective pursued by Uruguay Innovation Hub is to strengthen and enhance the ecosystem of innovative ventures that are in an expansion stage, based on the advice and support of an accelerator.
The application process, which began with the call on September 20 and ended on December 5, captured the attention of several consortiums at a global level, since in addition to the countries mentioned above, initiatives from Estonia and Mexicoas well as national proposals.
From the government, they point out that the openness to collaboration of some of these globally renowned actors demonstrates the country’s recognition as “an emerging destination for innovation and entrepreneurship”.
Likewise, in Uruguay Innovation Hub stated that the call “not only underlines the commitment of the Uruguayan government to the promotion of innovationbut also the recognition of the importance of attracting investments and specialized knowledge to enhance the economic development of the country.
Along these lines, they highlighted that “the attraction of the startup accelerator will mark a milestone in the evolution of the Uruguayan entrepreneurial ecosystem, consolidating its presence as a relevant actor on the international scene.”
What will the accelerator selection process be like?
Once the application period has closed, a committee of experts will study each of the proposals in detail and will proceed to make a priority list based on the previously defined criteria.
Finally, the Steering Committee of the Uruguay Innovation Hub will select the business accelerator that is going to settle in the country, which, they assure, “will play a crucial role in promoting ventures based in Uruguayoffering not only financial resources, but also strategic guidance and access to global networks.”
