Hardly any money in the budget for cyclists: “In the town hall there is pure show politics”

The topic “Ride a bike” remains highly emotional in Steyr. The city recently made it into the headlines across Austria with the strong comments made by SP local councilor Rosa Hieß in the direction of the cycling lobby. Ahead of today’s budget council meeting, a new crack in city politics is now emerging: Transport City Councilor Judith Ringer (VP) feels excluded from the SP and the Greens on climate issues. The view of the topic “Cyclist” prove this clearly.

“There is hardly any money earmarked for cycle paths and sidewalks in the coming budget”Ringer gets upset, “The majority of this goes towards bridge renovations.” A cycle path could only be implemented along Punzerstrasse. There is no money for a cycle path concept, but the SP has budgeted 30,000 euros for a study on how cyclists should get from the rest yard to the city. “There was an agreement on the connection in Resthofstrasse some time ago in the city-surrounding area cooperation.” This was prevented by the SP and FP. A study should be carried out just because the SP favors the expensive variant on the edge of the slope. She has now organized that on January 29th an expert for cycle paths will inform the traffic committee and city senate about how targeted traffic planning can work.

City boss Markus Vogl (SP) counters that he doesn’t know of anything that Ringer would have liked money for: “But there is a gap from the Resthof towards Tabor and the city center. I would like to know where a cycling route is most suitable.” In any case, Resthofstrasse has some pitfalls.

Kurt Prack (Greens) is against the cycle path on the edge of the slope: “That would be a purely recreational cycle path. A connection along Ennser Straße would be optimal. Above all, the needs of schools must be taken into account.” The 30,000 euros for the study could definitely be put to better use elsewhere.

But Prack also gets his money’s worth from Ringer: “He and SP Environment Councilor Katrin Auer are on the transport committee, but they didn’t think it was necessary to inform me about the climate strategy.” Everything only happens in private, committees are bypassed. “There is more and more pure show politics going on in the town hall.”

Prack said: Unfortunately, the VP’s involvement in committees and climate workshops was sometimes very manageable.
