The Rotkreuz market in Aigen-Schlägl opened its doors nine years ago. Not a day too soon, as it turned out. After all, the social market was well received from the very beginning. One of the volunteers who has been there from the beginning is Maria Sonnleitner. She helps collect donations of goods and puts the products on the shelves every week.
“The last collection campaign was a great success,” says Maria Sonnleitner, not without pride, “the people were generous and always friendly.” Under the motto “Buy one more, give it away” people are always collecting in front of supermarkets, even in the run-up to Christmas.
Collecting for the variety of goods
These promotions bring variety to the product range and therefore bring great joy to customers. While food donations arrive relatively reliably, it is difficult to obtain long-lasting products. It’s also about hygiene products and the like. The fundraising campaign is a welcome help in this area. The number of people authorized to shop and purchases remains high and so does the turnover of the goods on offer, which are sold at reduced prices to people with low incomes.
The shelves are filled through such collection campaigns and through regular donations of goods from numerous supermarkets and partners. But there are also some supporters who send vouchers or goods to the Red Cross Market throughout the year.
Of course, at least as important as the goods are the numerous volunteer employees, whose team includes Maria Sonnleitner. She doesn’t regret her decision to work in the market: “When I started, I just wanted a meaningful job and to help with the project,” she says. “Now the community is important to me, that motivates me incredibly.” As we all know, the Red Cross has the right jacket for everyone.
