The project of trolley car that will unite Pinewood (Cannelloni) with Old City (Montevideo) is still standing, as explained by the Minister of Transportation and Public Works, José Luis Falero, and assured that they do not rule out that it goes through the 18 de Julio Avenue even when the bike path is finished.
Last week the leader assured that the portfolio received the advances from the companies that are promoters of the project of the Train-Tram. Among the most important are Stadler, Stiller and Saceem. In that sense, the minister highlighted that he received a detailed progress of the project from them.
“I have understood that ministry technicians, with the municipalities, are going to send this work to advance in detail. It is a long process, but it is going at a good pace,” explained the leader on Radio Montecarlo.
As for the route that the tram will take, it will depend on the Municipality of Maldonado about whether it will pass through 18 de Julio Avenue or on another street. “It is part of what the mayor has to define when this progresses. This project will be finished early in this period, so that it can be put out to tender in the next administration,” Falero explained.
The keys to the project
The tram train would begin to be built in 2025, according to the construction companies. The consortium of the three construction companies Saceem, Stadler and Stiler have already presented a pre-feasibility study to Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) with which the government portfolio agreed, however, they suggested carrying out other new studies on the subject.
Milton Torres, from the Stiller company, pointed out at a press conference that “the idea is that the layout of the line coexists with the existing traffic,” and that on Avenida Italia “the natural thing would be for it to go through the central flowerbed.” “These final definitions will arise from the meetings held with the Municipality of Montevideo and with the Municipality of cannelloni“We are thinking about 26 stops in total from El Pinar to Ciudad Vieja,” he said.
For its part, Alejandro Ruibaldirector of Saceem, added that “this type of system has priority, it stops at stops, but then it does not stop at traffic lights, what stops is the rest” and that for this reason “all traffic must be rearranged to the priority of the public transport, which is the one that should have priority”.
“This system becomes trunk-fed and not atomized, that is, the buses leave from 18 de Julio and capture the passage in shorter circuits around the stations,” he added. Ruibalwho understands that the tram would mobilize between 80,000 and 100,000 users and would reduce travel time by between 30% and 40%, depending on the final design.
“There are a few months to continue working, but the important thing is that there is a clear direction,” said the engineer. “It is the largest urban project of the next 20 years in Montevideothat’s why we have to attack it once and for all,” he asserted.
