A delegation from the FIFA will visit the Uruguay next year with the aim of beginning to plan the opening match of the event that celebrates 100 years of history; However, the Sports Secretariat assured that they will try to negotiate more participations due to the structural modification that will be required.

Uruguay will host the opening match of the World Cup 2030 that will be disputed in the Montevideo Centenario Stadium. For this reason, next year a FIFA delegation will visit the country with the aim of meeting with the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) and the national government to begin detailing the steps to follow in the organization.

From this, the national secretary of sports, Sebastián Bauzá, He assured at a press conference that the objective is to try to negotiate more events so that they can take place in the country. “The idea is that when people come from the FIFA “Let’s sit down and see what other possibilities there are to celebrate this centenary of the first World Cup,” Bauzá remarked.

The leader assured that the country “deserves it,” but said that it would also be a good way to take advantage of the infrastructure reforms that will have to be carried out for the inauguration event. “A work has to be done in the Centenario Stadium and works have to be done that FIFA ahead of us, like a train or something that is a direct line from the airport to Centenario, there is a lot of work that we are going to have to adjust at the hotel level,” he explained.

“The idea is that this investment will serve to have more games, dream of a legends cup that can be won in those years or also the Copa America 2028“he added.

Regarding the fact that next year the Uruguay is facing elections and, therefore, with a change of government, the secretary assured that there would be no problem. “This started in 2009 and there were changes of government both in the AUF as at the national level, and the idea was continued and is maintained. There will be a table to work together,” she said.

A million dollar investment

The president of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), Ignacio Alonsohe announced that Uruguay will have “a month of celebrations” in the run-up to the World Cup 2030 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first FIFA World Cup, which was held in Montevideo and had the Celeste as the first Champion.

In this sense, the leader announced a million-dollar investment to modernize the Centennial Stadium and comply with FIFA regulations. In dialogue with channel 10, Alonso said that the investment in the Centennial will “an apartment” of 80 million dollarsbut that can reach 100 million to achieve the expansion of the capacity to 80,000 spectators, with “a combination of public and private investment”.

Among the reforms planned for the Centennial, it is planned to lower the level of the field by more than 3 meters. “Lowering the court 3.61 meters is enough to add 12,000 of the 20,000 more seats needed,” explained the president of the AUF.
