As in the past, the SPÖ is now ready to support the government in coping with the corona wave, be it with the implementation of the mandatory vaccination or the necessary measures. If the number of infections has stabilized, new elections would have to take place. Due to the deadline, this will not be possible until the end of April at the earliest. However, this requires the approval of the ÖVP or the Greens – the opposition alone cannot force elections.

Rendi-Wagner did not see a contradiction to the mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig (SPÖ), who rejected new elections in the Ö1 morning journal and in the news magazine “profil”. First, the crisis must be mastered, only then should the polls take place. The country would be preoccupied with the consequences of the pandemic for a long time. “This requires a government that is fully capable of acting, that is stable.” Otherwise the challenges of the pandemic and its consequences would not be solved. Currently, however, they have the third Federal Chancellor in 52 days, two of which have never stood for an election, as well as the most serious allegations against a “crumbling” ÖVP.
A new election presupposed that there was a majority for it in the National Council “and I don’t see that at the moment,” said Ludwig in the “Ö1” journal. As long as the two governing parties want to work together, this majority will not exist either. The mayor of Vienna appealed for all parties to work together. “We should all pull together like we did at the beginning of the pandemic.” Unfortunately, the federal government had left this path, had it not done so, “we would have spared ourselves a lot of problems, including the fourth wave,” said Ludwig. Now it is necessary to look ahead.
