There is now good news from the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) and the Upper Austria Food Inspectorate. They checked fish, free-range eggs and meat from free-range pigs from the Braunau district. A small amount of PFAS was only detected in two egg samples – but this is well below the limit value. The harmful perfluoroalkyl substances were not detected in any other samples. “It was important that after the regional contamination of wild boars with PFAS that became known, we also examined other foods for these industrial chemicals. The results are encouraging, the fears did not come true,” says Green Party state councilor Stefan Kaineder.
PFAS are used in the manufacture of products such as textile coatings. The substances are considered carcinogenic, increase cholesterol levels and can cause developmental toxic effects in unborn children. They can reduce the immune response to vaccinations.
