The life stories of female scientists who were unrecognized during their lifetime are the focus of a puppet theater series “Circus of Knowledge” at the JKU. After Ali Mayer-Pernkopf brought Mary Anning’s life to the stage in a child-friendly way, it is now the turn of Ada Byron Lovelace. The performance can be seen regularly until the end of December.
Produced by circus leader Airan Berg, Mayer-Pernkopf has written the biography of Lovelace, who is considered the world’s first female programmer “Kimishibai” implemented: In this Japanese form of paper theater, stories are told in front of elaborately designed background images. “I then add characters to the whole thing so that something moves on the stage – the children should concentrate on the story for around 50 minutes”explains the artist.
The protagonist offers a good introduction to the lives of women in the 19th century, says Mayer-Pernkopf: “She tried to assert herself in an entirely male world – unfortunately she didn’t quite succeed.” Lovelace, who was the daughter of the famous poet Lord Byron, worked with Charles Babbage. This one invented it “analytical machine”an early form of computer.
Lovelace was the first to realize that this would not only make calculations, as originally intended, but would also eventually be able to transmit images and text. She delivered that “program”, with which the calculating machine ran. As a woman, she was not allowed to sign her code with her full name, but only with her initials. “The focus is on her childhood, which was marked by loneliness, her mother’s drills and three years of paralysis as a result of polio”explains Mayer-Pernkopf.
