Andy Murray, Andrej Rublev, Grigor Dimitrow or Karen Khachanow – Austria’s tennis ace Dominic Thiem currently has great impact partners at the training camp in Dubai in preparation for the 2024 season.
After his last match of the season in Metz, the former world number three went on vacation to a Greek island with his family and girlfriend Lili. “I started doing fitness after a week and a half or two weeks and also made good use of the time at home to improve the minor problems that I had accumulated over the last year.” He also visited the Red Bull Athlete Performance Center in Thalgau near Salzburg three times. “They helped me a lot with my knee there. In the end it wasn’t a big problem.”
After many fitness sessions, the 30-year-old feels ready to rebuild. “Tennis is really starting now in Dubai. I feel good and stable, physically everything is fine,” says the world number 98. Thiem will then fly to Australia on Christmas Day. His start will take place in Brisbane at the beginning of January, then he has planned the invitation tournament Kooyong Classic, which, like the Australian Open (from January 14th), will take place in Melbourne.
At home, more precisely with Thiem’s father Wolfgang in Traiskirchen, Austria’s current number one, Sebastian Ofner, is getting the finishing touches. “It was necessary to really slow down and relax after the long season. Also to realize what had happened,” says the Styrian. The 27-year-old, who made it to the round of 16 at the French Open this year, rose to 43rd place in the ATP rankings.
Davis Cup is planned
After Melbourne, both he and Thiem have planned the Davis Cup trip to Limerick against Ireland at the beginning of February. Thiem will then play in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown. Ofner would like to compete in South American tournaments before the Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami.
