If the hot start behavior, the chain tension, the counter screw of the chain tensioner or similar are criticized for a chainsaw in the total of 1200 customer reviews, it can be assumed that the product is not very safe. However, authorities and consumers usually neither have the time nor the opportunity to wade through all the reviews on all online trading platforms. A research project at the Hagenberg University of Applied Sciences could provide a solution.
“Online retail represents a new source of product information. It also contains feedback on safety concerns such as product risks, missing information or suggestions for improvement. This is exactly what can help future buyers if you control the information and make it quickly accessible. This is easily possible with AI “, explains Andreas Stöckl, head of the winning project from the FH Faculty of Information, Communication and Media in Hagenberg. The project was awarded the EU Safety Award.
Quickly analyze customer reviews
The researchers have created software accessible to government through a web application that automatically downloads reviews from online shopping portals and uses natural language processing techniques to analyze this data quickly and efficiently. The OpenAI GPT AI language model is used to identify security risks and highlight the problems.
“These language models can be used well to identify and summarize security risks in the reviews,” says Stöckl: “We use advanced machine learning techniques to cluster the problem areas and identify common themes within the data.”
The study convinced the jury
The functionality of the software was checked as part of a study in which it was applied to one of the major online shopping portals. This also convinced the European Commission, which has now awarded the project an award. Anna Maschek from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Robert Bauer and Johanne Trauner-Karner from the project partner Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit and Andreas Stöckl took part in the award ceremony. The award citation praises the application’s practical utility: “It is a useful tool for companies to monitor the safety of their products and plan for safer designs in the future. It can also help policymakers monitor and enforce regulatory priorities and take more proactive measures.”
