Nord Stream 2 may leave the United States without a defense budget

Fierce disputes on Capitol Hill between opponents and lobbyists of Nord Stream 2 could leave the United States without a defense budget for next year. One of his amendments concerns the sanctions on the gas pipeline, which lawmakers cannot agree on in any way, Axios portal writes on December 3.

“The big picture is that President Biden’s decision to let Nord Stream 2 grow, as well as his efforts to block the sanctions amendment to the annual congressional defense budget bill, have sparked a fierce battle on Capitol Hill,” the report says.

The authors clarify that the gas pipeline caused no less controversy in the Senate, where Republicans threaten to block the national budget if majority leader Chuck Schumer does not agree to amend the sanctions.

In this case, the US defense budget for the next fiscal year must be adopted by December 31.

Biden lifted sanctions against Nord Stream 2 in the spring to restore U.S. relations with Germany. The White House argued that the pipeline was too close to completion to block it, and that sanctions would undermine “transatlantic unity.”

The Prime Minister of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Manuela Schwezig, criticized the preparation of the US sanctions against the companies participating in the Nord Stream 2 project. She called the unreasonable policy of Washington, which either acts as a comrade-in-arms of the FRG, then changes its views.

On November 30, Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, stressed that Russia sees no problem in the outrage of US congressmen over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, since, according to him, the US legislature has nothing to do with the project.

The construction of SP-2 was completed on September 10. It was built from Russia to Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic states, Poland, the USA and Ukraine are opposed.
