In many companies and public sector institutions, top managers earn more than the Federal Chancellor of the Republic. In 2022, the annual salaries of the 58 members of the board of directors or management in 26 companies were higher than the chancellor’s salary of almost 317,000 euros. This emerges from a report by the Court of Auditors published on Friday.
The highest average board salaries are paid by the Post (1.99 million euros) and the association (1.46 million euros). The overall average for board members of all companies examined was just under 219,000 euros in 2022. That was more than 2021 (214,500 euros), but less than 2020 (220,600). In an industry comparison, top managers in agriculture and forestry earn the best, on average just under 410,000 euros. The “transport and storage” sector ranks second with almost 361,000 euros.
For its current income report, the Court of Auditors collected the average income of 459 federal companies and institutions for 2021 and 452 companies for 2022. The data contains information on the income of board members and managing directors, supervisory board members and employees.
The proportion of women is 36.2 percent
The proportion of women has increased both in the boardrooms and on the supervisory boards – in the executive and management areas from 21.1 percent in 2019 to 24.1 percent in 2022. The proportion of women on the supervisory boards was still 31.7 percent in 2019 , by 2022 it rose to 36.2 percent.
The top female managers have also caught up with their male colleagues in terms of income: the income of female board members or managing directors averaged a good 193,000 euros across all sectors in 2022. That was 85 percent of the average salary for men (a good 227,000 euros). In 2020, female managers earned 77.3 percent of what men earned.
On the supervisory boards, women have almost caught up with men in terms of income: female supervisory board members received an average of almost 5,000 euros in 2022, which was 97.8 percent of the average remuneration of their male colleagues. In 2020, female supervisory board members received a tenth less remuneration than men.
