In solidarity with “criminalized” members of the “last generation,” around 60 members of Fridays for Future (FFF) gathered in front of the Linzer Landhaus on Saturday afternoon. According to a spokesman for FFF-Linz, demonstrating for climate protection measures is “increasingly being punished”.
The reason for the rally was the investigations by the Vienna public prosecutor’s office that became known last week several members of the “Last Generation” climate protection group. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the initial suspicion was that highways and traffic junctions, as parts of the critical infrastructure, had been severely damaged by the “climate adhesives”.
In this context, reference is also made to Section 278 of the Criminal Code, also known as the “Mafia Section”. Among other things, reference is made there to the commission of “non-minor damage to property”. On this basis, organizations that commit serious crimes or significant acts of violence against life and limb should be convicted.
In response to OÖN’s request, the FFF emphasized that although it did not support the climate sticker form of protest, it did condemn the “criminal prosecution of parts of the climate movement”.
“Funeral March for Nature Conservation”
The “funeral march for nature conservation,” which was not approved by the police, was also the topic of the rally. Originally The citizens’ initiative Pro Natur Steyrtal, together with the Nature Conservation Association, wanted to march across the country road to the country house in Linz today to draw attention to what they saw as the “disastrous gas drillings” in Molln, not far from the Kalkalpen National Park.
Frederic Chopin’s Funeral March was sung using the instruments they had brought with them. One speaker spoke of a “clearly wrong signal” that Austria was sending by approving new fossil fuel projects.
