Who is Valérie Pécresse, the Elysee candidate that scares Macron

The truth is that the former minister of Nicolas sarkozy, 54, current president of the Ile-de-France region, “will give everything”, as she promised today, in addition to thanking her followers for putting her force back on the political scene after the debacle of 2017, when for the first time in the Fifth Republic no party representative passed the first round.

The election of Pécresse redistributes the cards on the table of the presidential elections in April, pending the landing of the only great candidate yet to be declared, Emmanuel Macron.

Its strength is a presidential party that presents itself as a platform to which centrists, loyal to La République en Marche, MoDem centrists, youth movements and parties like Horizons adhere, created by former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.

On the other hand, the situation of the left is more than ever fragmented and for the moment, without great hope, with the socialist candidate Anne Hidalgo to which the surveys give between 4 and 6% and a Jean-Luc Mélenchon, around 10%.

Meanwhile, there will also be a divided extreme right, between the traditionalist and proven of Marine Le Pen and the extremist and radical of Eric Zemmour.

The position of the Republicans after the election of Valérie Pécresse, considered a difficult and hard-working character, was commented on by Christian Jacob, party president: “The right wing found its DNA, it is popular and supportive, a true team prepared to lead our country.”

To the applause of the supporters at the party headquarters, the winner took the stage: “Thank you for having the courage” to choose the first Republican candidate, said who, according to polls, seemed defeated above all by Xavier Bertrand, eliminated instead in the first round, but also by Michel barnier and Eric Ciotti.

“I will know how to be worthy of it”, added, and immediately expressed their bond “with all the women of France”. “I will give it my all” in the presidential campaign, he added.

Playing the card of the sympathetic right-wing female electorate is obviously the first blow to that possible hostile internal fringe that would have preferred Ciotti, close to many positions of the misogynist and ultra-traditionalist Zemmour.

The first round of the French elections is scheduled for Sunday, April 10, 2022. If no candidate obtains an absolute majority of the votes cast in the first round, a second round will take place between the two most voted candidates, two weeks after.
