According to the folk culture calendar of Upper Austria, the people of Gmund were the first to introduce Christmas tree diving during Advent, that was 57 years ago. The drowned and injured divers are now also being remembered in several other communities.
In Lambach, the Christmas tree diving in the Traun takes place on Friday at 6.30 p.m. in front of the UTC clubhouse (Badgasse 12). “We are doing this for the 22nd time this year,” says Bernhard Hetzmannseder, chairman of the Lambach diving club. He expects 200 to 300 visitors again. “We first swim a little downstream with magnesium torches and sink the Christmas tree, which is lit with LED candles, at a depth of five meters, where we attach it to a concrete base, as it naturally has strong buoyancy,” says Hetzmannseder. We remember all divers who died in accidents. Fortunately, no diving member of the Lambacher Club has ever died in a diving accident.
Water temperature of 6 degrees
The temperature of around 6 degrees in the Traun is compatible with the wetsuit. “We only feel cold when we go in and out, but our immune system is mobilized through the dives,” Hetzmannseder is convinced.
Visitors can warm up at the atmospheric fire bowls, with mulled wine and homemade punch, and there are bratwursts to fortify themselves. The Christ child of the Lambacher Traunfürsten will surprise the children with a small gift.
Visitors can also look forward to a beautiful fireworks display. Admission is free.
However, the traditional divers’ Christmas of the volunteer fire department in Aschach an der Donau, which was planned for Saturday, December 16th, could not take place. Due to the currently very high water level and the rapid current, safe diving in the Danube is currently not possible. That’s why the fire department was forced to cancel the divers’ Christmas this year. (krai)
