There is good news from the professional cycling team Felbermayr Simplon Wels: The three team members who were seriously injured in a traffic accident through no fault of their own on the way to the training camp in Croatia are on the road to recovery. They have all now been released from the hospital. You can begin rehab soon and, as things stand, should be ready to race again at the start of the season in March 2024.
The accident occurred two weeks ago near the Croatian city of Zadar. The team’s training camp for the 2024 season took place there. The drivers were divided into several cars for the journey. The three accident victims shared a car and had almost reached their destination when they stopped at a red light six kilometers from Zadar.
The way back to the start
A few seconds later, a van crashed into the professional cyclists’ car at high speed. It later emerged that the driver of the van was heavily intoxicated. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle drove into the athletes’ car at around 100 km/h. All three professional cyclists were so seriously injured that they had to be taken to a nearby hospital for intensive medical care.
While two of the athletes were in relatively good condition just a few days after the accident, the third had to be cared for in the intensive care unit for a long time. He has now recovered sufficiently to be able to leave the hospital. After rehab, all three should be ready to start training again and compete at the start of the season in March.
Since the serious accident was caused by an alcoholic driver, the professional cyclists are appealing to all road users in the run-up to Christmas to become aware of their responsibility, especially in the run-up to Christmas. The accident showed how quickly drinking too much alcohol at the wheel can have serious consequences, according to a press release.
