Having grown up in the age of rotary telephones and quarter lines, seniors often find it difficult to use the new technology – at least if no one explains it to them. Even for younger generations, it is often difficult to keep up with the modern smartphone world. But the seniors don’t let themselves be left behind so easily: This year, more than 1,000 people received further training on the subject of cell phones through the Seniors’ Association in the Rohrbach district alone. “Corona has shown it: those who were able to send and receive photos, make video calls or write messages got through the crisis better,” says Senior Citizens’ Association district chairman Leopold Wipplinger. But it also became apparent that there is some catching up to do. The senior citizens’ association’s educational offerings range from free trial courses for people without a “wipe cell phone”, in-depth smartphone courses to consolidate the functions you have learned, to regular cell phone get-togethers. District education officer Franz Andexlinger, a former high school director, teaches many of the courses on offer. “These meetings promote exchange and help combat the loneliness of older people. Furthermore, those who cannot keep up with the digital world these days become dependent on others to help them,” he says. In addition, it is not uncommon for you to have a financial disadvantage if you cannot use certain online offers. The most important goal of the courses is for the participants to be able to use the smartphone themselves: “It’s no use having grandkids take the phone from grandma and solve a problem. This provides a short-term solution, but it doesn’t change the problem itself,” says Andexlinger. The next course starts on January 16th in the ÖVP district office in Rohrbach-Berg. Of course, it’s not just senior citizens’ association members who are welcome. Register at: f.andexlinger@eduhi.at
