Around a dozen others were injured when attackers opened fire on revelers in the town of Salvatierra in Guanajuato state, the city administration said on Sunday.
According to media reports, the so-called Posadas were celebrated there, during which the search for a shelter by Mary and Joseph, which is recorded in the Bible, is reenacted in the run-up to Christmas. The motive for the attack was unclear. Guanajuato was recently the state with the most homicides in Mexico. In the important industrial region in the center of the country, the drug cartels Santa Rosa de Lima and Jalisco Nueva Generación face each other.
A wave of violence has been raging in Mexico for years. Last year there were 31,936 homicides per 126 million inhabitants. Numerous drug cartels and other criminal groups are fighting for control of areas of influence and smuggling routes. They often have connections to corrupt politicians and security forces. Most homicides are never solved.
