Two Wels high schools become “ambassadors” for the EU Parliament

Among the 17 Austrian schools that were honored as “Ambassador Schools of the European Parliament” this year are two from Wels: Delegations from the Franziskus-Gymnasium and the Wallererstraße High School traveled to Vienna on December 15th to accept the award from Othmar Karas. The Vice President of the EU Parliament praised the around 2,000 schools that are now part of the network: “The committed participation of the young generation fills me with confidence for our future and our democratic values.”

For several years, both schools have focused on numerous areas of focus on the European Union: school trips to Strasbourg, teaching focuses, cooperation with partner schools in other EU countries, Erasmus+ stays for students and teachers and much more. The two high schools had to meet six uniform criteria across Europe in order to receive certification as an ambassador school.

Gisela Gutjahr, teacher at BRG Wallererstrasse, accepted the certificate together with director Karin Schachner. “This award is a highlight of years of work at the school – for many European projects,” she said.

Elisabeth Schoberleitner, director at the Franziskus-Gymnasium, was accompanied by students Ela Güney, Elisabeth Stroh and Emilia Brummer. They are happy about the award: “By bringing together many different schools, we have the opportunity to get to know other students who want to contribute something to the EU. It is an honor to now be part of the EU ambassador schools,” said the three.

The “ambassador schools” program has existed in Austria since 2017. Currently, more than 130 schools from all federal states are taking part. With the accreditation, the schools also commit to continuing to focus on education in the context of the EU and to convey European values.
