Researchers demand that emojis of animals and plants should become more diverse.

Dogs, cats, roses, daisies or toadstools – there are emojis for many animals and plants on the smartphone. But researchers are now criticizing the lack of diversity in small digital images. The biodiversity of nature is not represented with sufficient precision, and some groups of animals and plants are severely underrepresented, writes an Italian scientific team in the journal “iScience”.

Researchers demand that emojis of animals and plants should become more diverse.

Their argument: More diversity in nature emojis would make people more aware of the importance of species protection. The research group from the University of Milan states that the potential of emojis should not be underestimated in our digitalized society. For her study, she examined Emojipedia, an online reference work for emojis. Their conclusion: Animals are quite well represented, but plants, fungi and microorganisms are only very weakly represented. And: While there are numerous emojis about vertebrates, there is a lack of arthropods, such as insects and crustaceans and arachnids. There are many more species of arthropods in nature than of vertebrates.
