The Uruguayan Chamber of Poultry Processors (Cupra) issued a statement this Tuesday against the statements of the Meat Sellers Union (UVC) where it denies that there is a price increase or shortage in some cuts of chicken.

Contrary to what had been indicated by the UVC, Cupra assured, in a release to which he agreed Ambit, that in the last 5 weeks chicken slaughter was 8.2% higher than the previous 5 weeks, which is a “clear sign that companies increased their production to anticipate the increase in demand end of the year”.

They even assured that, if compared with the work of the last 5 weeks and the average for the entire year 2023, the increase is around 10%. Meanwhile, if this streak continues, the year could end on the rise, they assured from the chamber.

For its part, according to the latest data published by the National Meat Institute (INAC), In the months of November and October, the production sold by companies is 6% higher than in the same months of 2022. “Excepting the first three months of the current year, in which there was a slight downward trend in consumption (2% decrease), the rest of the period had a similar behavior to the year 2022, with a compensatory growth in the last months of this year,” the statement states.

Regarding prices, in the month of November the CPI rose 0.34% and poultry meat as a whole rose 0.01%, meaning that the value of poultry meat did not rise. “If we see the last trimesterthe CPI rose 1.59% and poultry meat as a whole fell 0.77″, they detailed in the statement. Regarding the annual data, the CPI rose 5.22% in the accumulated 11 months and the poultry meat As a whole, it rose 2.15%, so the values remained below inflation, according to the chamber.

Controversy with the UVC

After detailing the corresponding data, Cupra shot against UVC establishing that “misinforms the population in an attempt to defend their own and other interests in favor of the importation of products, and against national poultry farming.

In addition, they assured that the companies grouped in the chamber continue to make efforts to cover the excess demand observed this month, which exceeded all expectations, while doing everything possible to keep prices in check.

“Fortunately, the Uruguayan public continues to increase its preference for chicken meatwhich in the last 3 years had an increase in per capita consumption of 30%,” the statement concludes.
