13 years after an explosive device exploded at a refugee accommodation in Graz, three men have been held accountable in the Leoben regional court since Tuesday morning. A 28-year-old, who was only 15 at the time, initially confessed that he had planted an explosive device that he thought was a firecracker and set it on fire. It was a “test of courage” within a right-wing extremist group. After three hours he withdrew everything: he had only invented the perpetrator.
One of the 35 residents was injured in the detonation on October 11, 2010. An explosive device filled with black powder was used, which, according to investigations, was capable of seriously injuring people. Investigators tracked down the suspects in 2020 when one of the men was identified based on video recordings. When questioned, the accused gave two accomplices: a man of the same age and an acquaintance a few years older who were also said to have been in the same group.
Shortly before noon, the man withdrew his confession: After the judge listed contradictions, the lawyer stated that “everything was made up.” It was the pressure of the interrogation that made him confess. The other two also had “nothing” to do with the matter.
