Indonesian death toll rises to 13

The death toll from the eruption of the Semeru volcano on the island of Java in Indonesia has reached at least 13 people, dozens were injured. This was announced on Sunday, December 5, by Reuters, citing the Disaster Relief Agency.

The eruption began on Saturday, as ash covered nearby villages in East Java and caused people to flee in panic.

According to the authorities, 13 people died, two of whom were identified. Another 98 people were injured, most of them have burns, and 35 people were hospitalized. 902 people were evacuated from the disaster area. In addition, the eruption damaged a strategic bridge connecting the two districts and destroyed several buildings.

Rescuers also managed to evacuate 10 people trapped at the foot of the volcano.

Semeru is 3600 m high and is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia. Its previous eruption took place in January, but then human casualties were avoided.

Earlier, on October 20, Aso volcano erupted in southwestern Japan in Kumamoto prefecture. It is located just 130 km from the Ikata nuclear power plant. The ejected column of ash rose to a height of 3.5 thousand meters. No deaths or injuries were reported.
