The four-legged investigators played their part in ensuring that criminal investigators from the drug group uncovered a transatlantic drug smuggling route, the Lower Austria State Police Directorate announced on Thursday. The result was five arrests in this country.
“Pitt von Taffatal” and “Pero” proved their fine noses between July 4th and September 9th. The investigators subsequently came across four Malaysian citizens between the ages of 34 and 59 and a 38-year-old Chinese citizen. The quintet had been ordered to Vienna by the clients to pick up the drug packages, pack them airtight in suitcases in specially rented apartments and then smuggle the cannabis herb themselves to Germany, England and the Netherlands, according to the police.
65 packages never reach the senders
With the support of the Federal Criminal Police Office, it was possible to investigate a group of perpetrators of predominantly Chinese origin who were operating from Canada. The organization was ultimately assigned 65 pieces of mail to Austria with a total weight of 220 kilos and a street value of around 2.2 million euros.
The four Malaysian suspects and the Chinese citizen were arrested with the support of the Lower Austria State Criminal Police Office and the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, some of them while picking up the mail or immediately before the cannabis herb was transported onward. According to the police, only the 38-year-old did not confess. All five men were taken to the local prison by order of the Korneuburg public prosecutor’s office and, according to the state police headquarters, have since been sentenced to prison terms of several years.
