Completely exhausted, wet and shaking: This is how a vixen was discovered in Ebensee (Gmunden district) at the end of November. The little red ball of fur made a miserable appearance when it was found in a residential area. “The fox sat in front of the front door and wouldn’t run away,” says the animal-loving finder in a Facebook post. He first asked the Ebensee animal protection association and then contacted the local hunter. “He said we should just leave him alone, he would disappear again. In retrospect, I’m glad I didn’t do that,” said the Ebenseer.

He did everything he could to help the pitiful four-legged friend, who no longer moved from the spot. Employees of the Ebensee animal protection association picked up the vixen in a large cage late in the evening and took her to a veterinarian the next day, who described her condition as critical. As it turned out, the animal that was found was suffering from a high fever and an infection.

“She was probably looking for human help,” said an employee of the Schabenreith animal paradise in Steinbach am Ziehberg (Kirchdorf an der Krems district), where the wild animal found shelter and was christened “Magenta”. There she is lovingly cared for by fox expert Doris Hofner-Foltin, as these video recordings from the animal shelter show:
“Magenta is in quarantine with us and is receiving intensive medical care. We hope that she will make it,” explained Harald Hofner, head of the animal shelter, at the beginning of the treatment. The two-year-old vixen, as female foxes are called, fought for days to survive – with success. “There are now clear signs of improvement. Perhaps it is the boundless trust that she placed in her rescuers and carers that ultimately kept her alive,” said the carers at the animal shelter.
