Be careful, it will be uncomfortable! Wind peaks of up to 90 km/h in the lowlands, in exposed locations and on the mountains, hurricane-force winds, plus heavy rain, snowfall at higher altitudes – the experts at Geosphere Austria (formerly ZAMG) are issuing an orange weather warning for all of Upper Austria. It comes into force on Thursday at 10 p.m. and is valid for the next 48 hours.
Strong rainfalls
“It will be turbulent in the next few days,” said meteorologist Maximilian Stärz in an interview with OÖN. In addition to the wind, a strong northwesterly current brings intense precipitation. Below 800 meters it falls most of the time as rain, up to 1300 meters it falls at least temporarily as snow. It rains heaviest in the direct north-western reservoir between Wolfgangsee and Weyer. Due to the expected rainfall between 50 and 100 mm, there is a risk of local flooding, mudslides and landslides.
More than a meter of fresh snow
More than a meter of fresh snow will accumulate in the mountains by Sunday, with snowfall levels fluctuating greatly between valley levels and 1,300 meters. The risk of snow breakage is high due to the heavy, wet snow. Snow drifts are also to be expected and the avalanche situation will worsen massively in the coming days. The Kasberg ski area stopped operations on Thursday due to the weather.
Dangerous combination
What is particularly dangerous in lowlands is the combination of precipitation and wind over an unusually long period of time. The soggy ground increases the risk of falling trees. “Although there are no extreme storm peaks, the wind is still blowing at a consistently high level. You definitely have to be careful,” says Stärz. The Geosphere recommends avoiding forests, parks and avenues, limiting outdoor activities and exercising caution on the roads in the next 48 hours. Power outages and problems in public transport cannot be ruled out either.

This is what you should pay attention to now:
- Avoid forests, parks and avenues
- Reduce your speed in traffic, avoid overtaking maneuvers and keep your distance
- Plan for delays in road, rail and air traffic
- Do not park vehicles near trees
- Limit outdoor activities
- Expect local power outages
- Follow the instructions of the relevant authorities
The reason for the weather situation is an interaction between a low over southern Europe and a high over western Europe, with a band of strong wind in between that brings one band of rain after another to us like a conveyor belt.
The forecast in detail
Already in the course of Thursdays The wind picks up noticeably, reaching gale force on Friday night. From Thursday afternoon onwards, heavier showers can be expected everywhere, and the snowfall limit will rise to over 1000 meters.
It will be stormy and wet Friday. The most precipitation falls in the southern and western parts of the country, but the rest of the country can also expect occasional heavy showers. The snowfall limit is 800 to 1000 meters, and slightly lower in the Mühlviertel.
It’s similar Saturday: There is intense rainfall again, especially in the south and in the Mühlviertel. The snowfall limit in the Alps is around 1200 meters. In the eastern Mühlviertel it can still snow heavily in the morning down to 600 meters. According to Stärz, the forecasts are still uncertain.

Weather calming until Christmas Eve
The weather is slowly calming down Christmas Eve in sight. “It remains windy and unstable, but at least the storm is easing,” says Stärz. Anyone who is still hoping for a White Christmas will be disappointed, unless they are at higher altitudes in the eastern Mühlviertel. “In any case, it won’t snow on December 24th,” says Stärz, the maximum temperatures are 5 to 12 degrees. For the first Christmas holidays As in previous years, a thaw is on the horizon. With temperatures of ten degrees and more, it is becoming far too warm for the time of year.
