As reported, new in the state of Upper Austria’s support package for social markets is the volunteer initiative with the Independent State Volunteer Center (ULF). “We connect local initiatives and associations directly with the social markets so that they can organize collection days and also provide volunteers directly for the markets,” says Social Provincial Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer.
The first of three campaign collection days has already been held at Eurospar on Linz’s Pöstlingberg. “It was a great day of donations for all sides,” said ULF representative Ute Palmetshofer, drawing a positive conclusion in the OÖN interview.
Second collection day at the end of January
The volunteers, including four students from BRG Fadingerstrasse, used flyers to draw customers’ attention to the local supplier and to buy special products and donate them. With success: around 70 full shopping carts with a total of 500 kilograms of goods were collected for the Volkshilfe social market in Linz. “The result is extremely pleasing because it also depends on many external factors, such as the weather or the number of people shopping in the store that day,” says Palmetshofer.
In addition to the currently urgently needed goods, those responsible are also pursuing other goals with this campaign. “We want to create awareness among the population that socially disadvantaged people not only need support at Christmas time, but also the rest of the year,” emphasizes Palmetshofer.
The location of the second collection day, which will take place at the end of January, has not yet been determined.
