Snow chaos in Linz: Traces have still not been removed

The massive snowfall was too much for some trees and branches.

Since the heavy snowfall hit the country at the beginning of December, the employees of the city’s urban green and street maintenance department have been on constant duty. Not all traces have still been removed.

The clean-up work is in full swing, but it will still take some time until all the damage is removed. Those responsible say that the early timing of the heavy snowfall made the situation worse. Many trees still had leaves and this, combined with freezing snow, led to many broken branches. So far, around 140 tons of branches have been collected in the city area.

Some outdoor areas are still closed

“In addition to the very challenging winter service operation, the large amount of snow pressure damage must also be repaired, to a degree that even severe storms of this kind usually do not cause,” said the responsible city councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens) yesterday.

In addition to the “normal” winter service, many paths also had to be cleared of branches and the trees in kindergartens, schools and parks had to be checked. Some outdoor areas of kindergartens, schools as well as connecting paths and parking spaces are currently closed.

The reason why the clean-up work is still underway is due to “time-consuming climbing work” that is necessary to guarantee traffic safety and enable the final release, it said.
