As the calendar year draws to a close, it’s time to take stock. The sports region of Upper Austria traditionally does this shortly before Christmas in the presence of highly decorated athletes in the Olympic Center on the Gugl. This is where the course is set for notable successes such as the European Swimming Championship medals (bronze) and (Gold). Of course, success has its price. This doesn’t just mean the physical and mental effort, but also the financial effort.
And because the “model students” should lack nothing, the state parliament has decided to increase the sports budget for 2024 from the previous 17 million to 23.9 million euros. That is twice the amount that was distributed in 2018. “It’s money well invested, sport has a real importance in Upper Austria,” emphasized the regional sports councilor .
That’s how the state governor sees it too : “There were many great moments in 2023. It is important for future generations to have such role models in order to lead a better, healthier life. This brings positive energy.”
Money flows into athlete support, but also into infrastructure. Major projects included the construction of the two football arenas on the Gugl and in the Donaupark.
2024 will also be a year full of highlights. The national soccer team is preparing for the EURO in Germany from May 29th to June 3rd in Windischgarsten; the Summer Olympics (from July 26th) and then the Paralympics in Paris are also marked red on the calendar.
The Upper Austrian sports calendar is also packed with “delicacies”. For example, there is the January Rally in the Freistadt area (January 5th to 7th), the Upper Austria Ladies, which has been promoted to the tennis category 500, in the Linz Design Center (from January 27th), the Oberbank Linz Donau Marathon (on January 7th). April) or the European Table Tennis Championships, which will take place from October 15th to 20th in the Linz TipsArena.
