After NGO criticism, Greens demand reform of social welfare

Protest with a withered Christmas tree on December 13th.

As the OÖN reported, the list of points of criticism ranges from unreasonable requirements to a lack of contact options. Those seeking help are treated “unsocially and degradingly”.

Country is responsible

The Greens are therefore calling for a reform of the legal basis for which the country is responsible. The city, in turn, should use its discretion to benefit the people and “not go one better” with its enforcement practices. The fact that the declining number of social assistance recipients is regularly highlighted is more than cynical given the reported abuses, says social spokeswoman Julia Mandlmayr. Social officer Vice Mayor Karin Hörzing (SP) is urgently called upon to “eliminate the grievances”.

Mayor must act

Criticism also comes from the KPÖ. “The degrading treatment of people who are dependent on social assistance to secure their existence must come to an end. Mayor Klaus Luger is obliged to immediately establish a fair and humane enforcement system. Fight poverty, not the poor!” says local councilor Gerlinde Grünn.
