The president landed on the Hercules plane at half past one in the morning at the Carrasco airport.
President Luis Lacalle Pou He returned to the country this Thursday morning after spending 24 hours in Antarctica on a trip to explore the Uruguayan base and dialogue with the members of the military crew and scientists belonging to the Operation Antarkos 40.
The president spent 24 hours on the white continent accompanied by his three sons, Army commanders, Mario Stevenazzi; and the Air Force, Luis De Leon and the Minister of Defense, Javier García.
During their stay, the authorities toured the facilities of the Artigas Base while they discussed the projects being developed in the southernmost continent of the world with the military and scientists who are part of the Operation Antarkos 40.
The president returned to the country this Thursday after the visit around one-thirty in the morning on the Air Force Hercules plane in the Carrasco Airport. The trip took approximately eight hours for both the return and the outward journey, which took place on Tuesday morning and landed in the afternoon that same day.
What scientific projects are developed at the Artigas Base?
Once on the white continent, the head of state visited the scientific team present at the BCAA (Operation Antarkos 40)located in the May 25 island (also known as “King George”), belonging to the islands of La Buena Nueva (Antarctic territory claimed by the Argentina). The planning of the visit was in charge of Uruguayan Antarctic Institute.
Lacalle Pou toured the BCAA facilities and came into contact with the scientific projects being carried out, which are related to the structure and incidence of anthropic noise, as well as other geodetic, geophysical, topographical studies, and research related to penguins.
