During the excavation work to renovate the canal system in the area of Linz Castle, which has been ongoing since mid-November, archaeologists have come across special traces of history, as exclusively reported by OÖN.
20 graves and the remains of other people buried here were uncovered. In addition, a colored fragment of a massive stone arch was discovered in the foundation of the Rudolf Gate, which most likely comes from St. Gangolph’s Church, which was demolished in 1599. Anthropological studies, C14 analyzes and georadar measurements are intended to provide further insights into the medieval history of Linz and the exact location of the old castle church.
The anthropological studies promise important insights into the living conditions in medieval Linz, the age of those buried here, their state of health and their eating habits.
In the large castle courtyard, additional walls and a moat have been cut, which either belonged to the medieval castle or are even older.
