For Chihiro Naito it was the first encounter with Perchten: The Japanese woman swapped the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Tokyo for the Wels campus of the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences for six months, where she is currently spending an exchange semester.
At the “International Evening”, which is intended to promote exchange between local and international students, the exchange student recently found herself unexpectedly confronted with the legendary characters. You already have “Heard and read about Krampus, but haven’t seen one yet. But I prefer the Christmas markets”is their conclusion.
The International Evenings are one of the highlights of the academic year at the Wels campus of the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences. They take place three times a year and give students the opportunity to get to know the numerous nationalities and cultures represented on campus.

500 international students
In the current winter semester, more than 450 young people from more than 65 countries are studying regularly in Wels – meaning they are completing their entire studies there. There are also around 50 exchange students who spend one or two semesters in Upper Austria for an internship or study.
Representatives from more than 20 nations – from South Korea to Japan, Mexico and the USA to Estonia and Poland – presented their home countries at the recent International Evening. Students had the opportunity to exchange ideas at various stands. It is also tradition that traditional dishes from different countries are served: with sushi, guacamole and curry, the participants were also able to get culinary impressions from their fellow students’ countries of origin.

As a surprise, the FH management organized a Perchten run on campus to also introduce Austrian customs. Kamilla Trubicki from the International Office at the Wels campus also sees the events as an opportunity for local students: “By organizing the International Evenings, we would like to give all Wels students and employees the opportunity to get a taste of other cultures and get inspired by a stay abroad. With more than 100 partner universities worldwide, there is a suitable destination for everyone.”
The individual courses of study are also international: organized e.g. B. the English-language course of study “Electrical Engineering” had its own Christmas party with a particularly large number of international students. “This solidarity and joint ventures are particularly important for international students”says Kamilla Trubicki.
