House of Commons “speaker” Sir Lindsay Hoyle promised an investigation and a commission will take up the case next week, the Times writes.
And leaving, in turn, a warning to whoever brings cocaine or another illegal substance to Parliament, the “speaker” affirmed that he considers the issue as a priority and that he wishes to see “the full and effective application of the law” with serious penalties for those who break the rules.
“The information on illicit drug use in Parliament (…) is deeply worrying and I will urgently forward it to the Metropolitan Police this week”the Speaker of the Lower House told the BBC.
The aforementioned newspaper assured that “many sources have described occasional cocaine use by a group of deputies.” He also stated that two drug dealers were arrested, while another 13 people were arrested for possessing illicit substances “in or around the parliamentary compound.” The arrests occurred during 2021.
As reported by the press, the traces of cocaine were found in toilets in Parliament, and even in places where only men and women close to Prime Minister Boris Johnson can access.
“Dozens of MPs, Lords, councilors, investigators and employees have shared their stories of drug abuse in the halls of power in the UK on condition of anonymity,” the newspaper describes.
