The avalanche warning service said that extensive snowdrift accumulations were prone to triggering at all exposures above the tree line. The danger spots would also exist in the area of the tree line. Spontaneous avalanches are to be expected – especially during the night.
It was warned that avalanches could start and become large, especially on northern and eastern slopes in the various layers of fresh snow. There is a risk that the snow slabs in the main precipitation areas will become very large in some cases. There is also a pronounced risk of gliding snow avalanches – on steep grassy slopes at all exposures, especially below around 2,400 meters above sea level. It was said that the danger of avalanches should decrease on Sunday and the end of the intense rainfall.
“Orange” warning level
On Thursday, GeoSphere Austria issued the “orange” warning level for the state twice – both in terms of storms and in terms of fresh snow. On Friday, the storm was already making itself felt to some extent. Thousands of households were temporarily without power. The Achensee area and the Kitzbühel district were particularly affected. According to the state’s own network operator Tinetz, the power supply should be completely restored by the evening. Strong gusts of wind uprooted trees and led to road closures. In addition, isolated, local mudslides were recorded.
There were also problems in air traffic. According to media reports, several aircraft that were approaching the state capital Innsbruck had to take off shortly before landing. Some flights to Innsbruck are said to have been canceled.
